Recifal Ocean started because we kept finding conflicting information about reef-safe sunscreen. One source said mineral-only. Another said certain chemical filters were fine. Labels said "reef-safe" with no regulatory backing. We wanted clear, research-backed answers and could not find them in one place.

So we built that place.

Who We Are

A small group of people who live near the coast and care about what ends up in the water. We are not a company. We do not sell products. We do not accept sponsored posts or paid placements. When we recommend something, it is because we researched it and believe it works.

Our backgrounds span marine biology, cosmetic chemistry, and environmental journalism. We read the studies so you do not have to (though we link to them so you can verify our claims).

• Reef-safe sunscreen. What the term means (and does not mean), which ingredients to avoid, and how to read labels.
• Marine skincare ingredients. Seaweed, algae, marine collagen, sea minerals. Where the science is strong and where the marketing outpaces the evidence.

Our Standards

Every claim we make links to a published study, a regulatory document, or a named expert source. We distinguish between strong evidence (multiple randomized controlled trials), emerging evidence (preliminary studies), and traditional use (long history, limited clinical data). We label each clearly.

We update articles when new research emerges. We correct errors publicly. If a product we previously recommended turns out to have problems, we say so.

Why "Recifal"

"Recifal" comes from the French word for reef-related. Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but support 25% of all marine species. They are among the most threatened ecosystems on earth. Everything we write connects back to protecting them.
